Gard Says "No" to Nude Lara

Gard Says "No" to Nude Lara

11 Feb, 2010

It seems that Toby Gard, the creator of the chesty heroine, Lara Croft, has some modesty. A recently revealed selection of concept art that he drew while with Crystal Dynamics contains one picture of a semi-naked Lara – apparently, as far as he was willing to go when asked to draw Lara in her birthday suit.

“I was asked to do Lara nude. This was as close as I would allow myself to go,” Gard said.

The image is one of several that “didn’t make the cut” so it’s unlikely that you’ll see it in the upcoming The Art of Tomb Raider collection.

While it’s admirable that Gard is unwilling to demean Lara by drawing her naked, it’s nothing we haven’t seen before (Nude Raider, anyone?). At least if Mr. Gard was drawing it, it would have some chance of being tasteful – Tomb Raider art, in general, is gorgeous!

Hey! Maybe the creators of Nathan Drake would consider… nah, nevermind. ;)

I applaud his decision to not draw Lara naked. I think it would just demean the character, and turn her from ‘sexy’ to whore. Good judgment on his part.

  3. Yeah, I’m glad he put his foot down. That’s kind of tasteless, and let’s not forget the hacks that some people do to make her naked in-game already >:(

Belated, but I just wanted to poke my head in about that.

Being naked doesn’t make someone a whore and implying that Lara, a factional character of all things, would be a whore just because she was naked is rather appalling.

      Hi, Colleen.

I absolutely agree with you – being naked in no means intimates promiscuity. That said, when it’s used tastelessly and for no real discernible reason, it feels that it’s done for no reason other than vacuous titillation – which is surely an empty and unnecessary action?
