Want to play PS3-exclusives Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy XIII or God of War III but have been dithering about buying the hardware? Well, dither no longer, my friend, lest you be dithering for a damned sight longer than you’d hoped. At least, that’s what Sony are telling us.
Following reports that SCEA were worried about meeting demand for the Playstation 3 in the US, today Sony UK have piped up echoing similar concerns. Talking to MCVUK, Sony UK admit that sales of the 120GB PS3 Slim exceeded expectations by 20%, therefore putting supplies at risk.
“Whilst it is hugely pleasing that PS3 slim has been greeted so enthusiastically, we understand that this has lead to some stock issues, particularly with the 120Gb model,” said sales director Mark Howsen. “We are doing our best to address these issues and hope to catch up in the next few weeks.”
A cynical person would say that this is nothing but scaremongering designed to accelerate sales in time for the hotly anticipated exclusives – and I, for one, am just that cynical. How about are you?

I don’t know – the shortage probably is being exaggerated, but I gave in and bought a PS3, just after Christmas, purely to be ready for FFXIII.
Maybe others are being prompted by the upcoming game releases too.
I gave in and bought a PS3 for FF XIII. Actually, FF XIII isn’t exclusive, but I’d rather play it on the PS3, which is the system it was made for first.
I doubt the shortage is really that bad. While the PS3 has better overall exclusives coming up – Heavy Rain, Yakuza 3 – as well as many of the games that the 360 has, I think that this generation of gaming has (rather unfortunately) proven that people are more interested in multiplayer, FPS games instead of the “overall” experience (story, character development, dialogue, and gameplay). I don’t really expect Heavy Rain to sell as much as I’d really like it to sell, which is pretty sad.
