PS3 is catching up

PS3 is catching up

24 Apr, 2010

I remember when the PS3 first came out, there were videos, webcomics and even songs that made fun of Sony’s console with its high price and various features that people found to be unnecessary. Well now it seems that the PS3 has started to catch up in its sales figures. I’d like to make it clear that I’m not on any side of the console war, I happen to love them all, but it’s so nice to see people appreciating how great the PS3 has become.

I’m not going to pretend I understand any of this, but playstationuniversity.com have explained the sales figures over the years since its release.

“Microsoft has now announced 40.2 million Xbox 360’s shipped worldwide, so we thought we’d compare and contrast this with sales of the PlayStation 3. The following figures (from Microsoft and Sony fiscal results) take us from the Xbox 360’s 2005 launch, right up to the latest figures:

2005-06
Xbox 360 – 5.0 million units

2006-07
360 – 6.6m
PS3 – 4.2m

2007-08
360 – 8.7m
PS3 – 10.0m

2008-09
360 – 11.1m
PS3 – 9.6m

2009-10
360 – 8.8m
PS3 – 9.7m

These sales bring total sales to 40.2 million Xbox 360’s and 33.5 million PS3’s. That’s a difference of 6.7 million units. However, there’s something we’re not telling you. Sony has yet to announce it’s last quarter’s results, meaning that the Xbox 360’s numbers are made up of three fiscal quarters, compared to only two for the PS3. And as you can see the PS3 already leads by almost one-million units. So lets take a closer look:

Microsoft’s Fiscal Year 2009-10

——- Q1 — Q2 — Q3 — Q4 — FY — LTD

360: 2.1 — 5.2 — 1.5 — ? — 8.8 —- 40.2

PS3: 3.2 — 6.5 — ? —- ? —- 9.7 —- 33.5

Wii: 3.5 — 11.3 — ? — ? — 14.8 —- 67.4

Sony and Nintendo have yet to report their Q3 results (Q3 in Microsoft’s fiscal year). For Sony to meet its projections, the PS3 must have sold 2.2 million units in this quarter and, though shipments may have been tight, we expect Sony to meet this goal. The platform holder may even have bumped numbers up to 2.5 million (or more) — a sales result that would bring the difference between the Xbox 360 and PS3 to only 4.2 million units. That’s quite a success for a company that was solidly in third place and struggling to make ground.”

Good for you Mr PS3, I would give you a hug if I wasnt scared of getting my hair caught in your fan vent. So it seems that after all the explosive “taking the mick” that the Playstation 3 has endured, people have warmed up to it after all – either that or its taken this long for them to save up enough cash to buy one… ehem…

  1. Hell yeah! I always liked the PS3 better. I know it’s bad to stereotype, but I hated going on Xbox Live ’cause of the fact most are kids, but nobody ever, ever, EVER plays a playstation. I NEVER meet people who ask for my PSN ID, or to play games on PS3. Sad face.

    • Hang on … have WE even swapped PSN IDs?!

Anyway, in my case it was definitely about the cost. It was difficult to justify given the price difference between the PS3 and 360. But given the option, it’s definitely my console of choice.

      • I don’t think we have! I’m under Vvictis ’cause every other clever name I used was unavailable. They wouldn’t even take Sarscharz0r which was my Gamepro ID. Darn the luck.

I guess I’m bias about the PS3 ’cause I got it as a (very expensive) Christmas gift. So the cost never phased me lol

    • I can’t say I prefer the PS3 because I’ve never owned an Xbox. I’m hoping to remedy that very soon!

I’m pretty sure the PS3 will remain my console of choice though.

I, too, thought that the cost of the PS3 was absolutely ridiculous. It reminded me of when I was 12 years old, when I bought an issue of EGM (back in 1994) and read about the prices of the Neo Geo and Panasonic 3DO.

However, I definitely consider the PS3 to be the better console. I have a 360, and I have two games for it (Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia). There are no games for the 360 that I’m interested in playing.

Conversely, I have three PS3 games (Valkyria Chronicles, FF XIII, and Yakuza 3). I want to purchase Metal Gear Solid 4 soon, and I’m interested in FF Versus XIII.

Also, I’m sure lots of the 360 sales have to do with the infamous RROD.

  3. PS3 has some great games, but what makes it better is it’s multi-media prowess. The upscalling is great and the ability to stream HD content is the best. Mainly because of the Gigabit connection. With a DLNA server you can watch all your ripped movies.
