Dead Space franchise expands, again.

It seems like novel and animation tie-ins are big business these days. It has been announced that Dead space is getting a new graphic novel, titled Dead Space Salvage as well as a new animated movie, titled Dead Space Aftermath.

Dead Space Salvage focus’s a salvage team finding and boarding the Ishimura and encountering awakening necromorphes and facing a similar fate to other teams who have entered it. The novel is to feature the artwork of Christopher Shy and will be available from IDW publishing.

Dead Space Aftermaths’ story focus’s on a team who have been assembled by the government to locate marker shards to create a marker blueprint carrier. The movie will explain the events of the Aegis VII which was mentioned in the first game. At this stage, Aftermath doesn’t seem to be a sequal to the first animated movie, Dead Space Downfall.
Aftermath will be produced by Film Roman and available from Starz for its US release. Downfall was also produced by Film Roman and is available from EA in the US and Manga Entertainment in the UK.

Even though I was a fan of Dead Space, I haven’t seen the first animated movie of the series and will likely skip the second, but I am interested to see if the graphic novel manages to capture the intense atmosphere of the game. However, I wonder how many more times people are going to have to enter the Ishimura before people learn to stay away!

Other recent game franchises have also seen novels and graphic novels. Mass Effect has 2 novels available and another being planned for an upcoming release this year. There is also the Mass Effect: Redemption comic book which focus’s on Liara T’Soni as is based between the first and second games. Even though Mass Effect is my favourite games franchise in recent years, I have also avoided these books and comics. The fact that more franchises are getting these additions makes me wonder if I am missing out on something here? If they did Grand Theft Auto graphic novels they could certainly be interesting!
