Now when the demo of Ninety Nine Nights 2 Demo came out I was pretty excited. I know the first didn’t go down particularly well and was very much a love it or hate it game. But, I’m a big big fan of games like Dynasty Warriors and such, all those hack and slash, outrageously Japanese and crazy weapon games. So naturally I thought ‘brilliant, here’s a game that will have improved upon it’s faults and be perfect for folks like me’. Verdict: It’s alright. I mean it’s not fantastic and spectacular but it is, well, alright.
If you hate repetitive gameplay then stay away because you will loathe this. Gameplay mainly consists of button bashing mayhem, with the occasional special attack thrown in for good measure. Combos and attacks will obviously vary from character to character, but in the demo you are limited to Mr double-sworded-angry-man. The graphics are pretty impressive and the environments do feel very detailed and impressive, which is a lovely touch.
The Demo itself consists of you ploughing through enemy soldiers trying to get somewhere. I wasn’t actually really sure what I was doing. I know at one point you had to destroy some towers and a troll thing, but that was about it. Other than that I just found myself killing more and more soldiers in an attempt to achieve something. Naturally it’s hard to imagine the full game will feature many objectives those in the demo, but I suppose that’s what these type of games are all about, hacking and slashing. There is a sense of god-like power that the player feels when you are mowing down 50 soldiers at a time, but it’s only the dedicated players who will experience this euphoria throughout the demo, let alone the full game.
So as I stated before, it’s OK. The gameplay is as repetitive as you get, but the graphics are pretty decent. It’s easy to wonder whether the demo really does the game justice. This game does have potential, it could be fantastic, but the demo seems to lack that certain something. It’s probably longevity. Wondering if this game in it’s full form could sustain momentum that will ultimately attract new players. And unfortunately I don’t feel the demo is just not diverse and new enough to do this.
Have you played the demo? If not why not? If so, what are your thoughts? Leave your comments below.
