Persona fans have been waiting for the first next gen title of the series to be announced for some time, myself being included in that group. However, Atlus Japan have now announced in this weeks Famitsu that the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona team are working on a title called Catherine. Katsura Hashino, who directed Persona 4, has returned as the director/producer on this project. Catherine will see a release on both the Xbox 360 and PS3, which is an interesting revelation as all Shin Megami Tensei: Persona titles have been released on a Sony Playstation console (with the exception of the first title which gained a PC release in Japan). However, it is unclear as to whether this title is a spin off of the series, or is the official Persona 5 title.
Catherine is an action/adventure game with a horror twist, which is aimed “at adults”. Whether this means adult in terms of a more mature story or whether it involves more graphic violence and sex is currently unclear, even though the second could be more likely if the original article’s image is anything to go by! However, it would be nice to have a story which takes a departure from the high school setting which have been a mainstay in previous Persona titles. The original article also highlights that the game appears to be about a man who wakes up every night from his dreams, which also holds similarities to the gameplay style of previous games in the series where battles take place around midnight.
Series fans have highlighted that the main character of Catherine appeared in Persona 3 Portable (which is yet to see a European release). In the game, the female protagonist meets Vincent, a 32 year old salaryman lacking ambition. He has been charmed by 22 year old Catherine, is suffering from nightmares where he is climbing a never ending staircase. However, there is a rumor that if you die in the dream world you die in real life, establishing a link between the two worlds. More information about Vincent is available at Siliconera
Catherine will be released in Japan in Winter 2010.
