Tablet peripheral heading to Wii

Tablet peripheral heading to Wii

In what must be one of the most surprising peripheral announcements of recent years, THQ have announced they are bringing a graphics tablet to the Nintendo Wii.

THQ are even as bold as to say they expect to ship 1 million units – with no marketing and if they can convince people its a good idea they expect to sell more. Fans of Dragons Den recoil !

As well as a drawing app that will save to the SD card, THQ have been researching what types of games they could release on such a device and have come up with Pictionary – the draw without saying the word game and colouring books.

The $70 peripheral docks the Wii controller in it to power the device and is clearly aimed at younger kids, if these kids would rather gets their hands dirty with real pens or draw on their Wii screen will have to be seen. Remember the Wii screen resolution is only 852 X 480 but for their target market this is likely to be good enough.

  1. Wow! This is actually a very cool idea, I’ve always wanted a graphics tablet. Does this mention whether it’s capable of more complex drawings ect. or is it just a simple gadget for kids?

    • The tablet itself might be very good but the ability to draw more complicated drawings would have to be down to software, brush hardness, smoothing, transparency.

Perhaps the most exciting thing about this as a peripheral is that it would be a bluetooth tablet. The chances of it working with a PC or MAC could be quite high. I can already use my Wii controller as a pointer on my MAC.

  2. Interesting, it’ll be cool to see what games come out to work with this peripheral.
