Mackenzie's Musings: Marvel Vs Capcom 3 First Impressions

Now I’m not a great fan of fighting games. I have never dedicated hours to learning combos on street fighter nor have I ever unlocked every character on Tekken, but Marvel Vs Capcom 3 intrigued me. I was incredibly keen to get some hands-on time with the game despite being crap at the genre. My main reason was because I love Marvel. I am a massive fan of the comics and a lot of the games, so any opportunity that allows me to kick someone’s arse as a number of superheroes excites me a lot. I was also keen on having a look at how some of the Capcom characters play, mainly Chris for Resident Evil.

I didn’t think I was going to get the opportunity to play it since I heard Capcom weren’t actually on the main show floor. However, upon entrance to the Fable 3 stand the very friendly Lionhead employee informed me of a number of other games they were hosting in their Xbox section, one of which was Marvel Vs Capcom. ‘Oh Goody’ I thought, and straight after I was done with Fable I grabbed Steve and forced him to play me. Neither of us had any clue what we were doing so we figured we would be pretty even in terms of skill.

Steve chose a selection of Capcom characters including Chris and Dante. I went for a super-powered line-up consisting of Iron Man, Dr Doom and Dead pool. How could I lose? ‘FIGHT’ flashed up on the screen and both Steve and I bashed our buttons to dust. God knows what each button did but we sure as hell didn’t care and carried on bashing. The surprising thing is it worked. Both of us managed to pull off some ridiculous combos and even some super moves. Eventually we were both down to our last characters. Chris versus Iron Man. Unfortunately Steve just couldn’t cut it and Chris ended up shooting the floor on a number of occasions while I rained down laser beams and rockets galore. Beans was victorious. We decided we hadn’t learnt much in the way of how to play the game but we both agreed on one thing. It was fun, a lot of bloody fun.

I’m sure if I was a fighter connoisseur I would now go into the details of how the combos blend perfectly and how the characters are all evenly balanced. Unfortunately I am not. I can tell you that lovers of the fighting genre will adore this game. Personally I think it’s just as good for beginners, I mean you got to start somewhere, why not with this lovely instalment? So if it comes out and you’re unsure whether to buy it, then just give it a go. It’s got superheroes, it’s got shiny colours and it’s got Chris from Resident Evil. It’s lovely to look at and fun to play, what more do you want? It even convinced me to buy it when it comes out, and maybe one day I will be the greatest fighter in the world. Cue inspirational fighting music.
