The loveable Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb recently stated on his website that Xbox Live Gold memberships would receive a price increase in certain territories.
Starting November 1, a one month subscription in the UK will cost £5.99 (an increase of £1.00). In the US, a one month membership will cost $9.99, a three month subscription will carry a price tag of $24.99 and a one year subscription will cost $59.99. These are increases of $2, $5 and $10 respectively. Canadian and Mexican one month subscriptions will go up by $1 CAD and 100 Pesos each to $9.99 and 599 Pesos. All other subscription packages will have the same prices.
Larry Hryb stated:
“Since launching Xbox LIVE in 2002 we have continually added more content and entertainment experiences for our members, while keeping the price the same. We’re confident that when the new pricing takes effect, an Xbox LIVE Gold membership will continue to offer the best value in the industry.
However, we do want to thank our loyal members and give you the opportunity to lock in your current price with an additional discount, so now would be a good time to renew your subscription.”
How do you feel about these price increases? What do you think caused it?

I actually got an email from XBL today regarding this change.
I’m sure that the increased audio quality for XBL voice chat (http://tinyurl.com/27jear7) is one of the factors that lead to this price change, and hopefully they have plenty more upgrades to go along with it!
Yeah, I was wondering about that too. Coincidence? I THINK NOT! :p
While not completely happy with the increase in price, I’m not surprised by this news. The service has been going since 2002 and with the amount on offer £6 isn’t that much of an increase.
I’d certainly recommend getting the discounted yearly subscription while you can!
Personally, I’d rather have seen the improvements BEFORE the price hike. Right now, I have trouble justifying to myself the existing cost, let alone anything more – party chat is shit-on-a-stick-tastic, and it’s only recently that I feel XBLA has come into it’s own.
Will be waiting to see how exactly MS will be spending my extra £££s …
