Epic Citadel is free taster of Unreal Engine on iOS

1 Sep, 2010

Epic have produced a free demo of the Unreal Engine, the engine that powers Gears of War and Batman, for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad available on iTunes (eye, eye!!) following tonights Apple Conference.

I have installed this on my iPad and iPhone and the graphics on display in this tech demo are nothing short of astonishing. The port of the Unreal engine cements this as a platform to be taken seriously. Previous titles like Avatar have been graphically underwhelming compared to the full soft shadows, reflections and lighting provided by the Unreal engine.

This is in preparation for Epics own release of “Project Sword” an RPG heading to the iOS platform featuring multiplayer fighting from a third-person perspective for action and an first-person view for exploration that will use this Citadel as one of its environments. Follow the link to download this free taster for yourselves and let us know your impression.

The below screens are running at a smooth framerate in real time:

I pulled down epic citadel on my iPhone 4, and the effect is nothing short of amazing – on the retina display the skybox looks 100% real, and the graphics easily outshine anything other mobile consoles have to offer. Movement was alright, with the tap to move interface – not a fan of virtual joysticks, but still – jaw dropping :)
