Sony Announces New Pink PS3 Controller

Sony Announces New Pink PS3 Controller

If you weren’t already faced with enough colour choices when it came to buying an extraPlaystation 3 Dualshock controller, Sony has decided to give you one more colour to choose from…

Pink!

Sony is claiming that this new colour choice is perfect for girl gamers (because y’know, pink defines us as women) and for kids (I can only guess they mean young girls.) After all, no self respecting male would be caught dead with a pink controller.

Of course, I am being completely sarcastic. However, after surfing a few websites it appears that most males (on average) have this outlook on the new colour choice, some even going as far to say that the controller colour “seems unnecessary” and others think there aren’t enough girl gamers out there to make this colour choice “necessary.”

Playstation already offers red, blue, silver, and white PS3 controllers, alongside their regular black controllers. One has to wonder if anyone had issues with previous colours and why pink appears to be such a big deal to some (after all, no one is being forced into buying one.) Xbox 360 has had a pink controller on the market for a few years now, and is often hard to find in stores which I can only imagine is because it often sells out.

The controller is street dated for September 21st, so I suppose only time will tell how well sales go on the new girly controller. Will you be buying one?

  1. Nope. :/

I hate pink and society’s preoccupation by plastering it over everything that’s supposed to appeal to females but that said, if it gets a girl to pick up a controller and find out that gaming isn’t just for guys, then I can’t help but support it. Personally, however, I’m least likely to try something because it’s pink, not more. :P

  2. Retailers HATE this stuff. Pink controllers, DS’s, PSP’s etc, take AGES to shift. Plenty of female customers, it’s obviously aimed at the female consumer and even THEY don’t want this crap.

    • I suppose it depends on locations. I know where I work, we often get requested on our pink peripherals. Pink DS’s especially. I on the other hand am quite happy with my standard black. xD

  3. I don’t know many females who are really into games, but those I know who have bought DS consoles have gone for the recent bright colours, like the blue and green, rather than the pink.

  4. I’m not a fan of pink and even if I was, but somehow wasn’t a gamer, this wouldn’t draw me in. I think the types are people who will buy this are as follows:

    a. men who want to get their women into game so they buy them “their own controller!” (gag me)
–This tactic may or may not actually draw female gamers in, and while chauvinistic/shallow perhaps it’s not a video game phenomenon. Most people in relationships have dissimilar interests and its only natural to try to involve your partner with the things you like.

    b. people who like pink and like gaming (go for it)
    –It’s just a color, it’s personal preference, I don’t care.

    c. “trophy grrlg8mrz” that play video games for the attention of men (gag me… no gag them please)
–I’m just not a fan of people, and it seems to mainly be women, who act like this. Vapid attention seekers.

Ultimately there is a small consumer base for this product. It will be an example of failed marketing.

  5. I probably wouldn’t mind so much if it wasn’t an awful bright bubblegum pink. I think the pink DS is a nice shade, but every time I see a game accessory for “girls”, 90% of the time its this obnoxious pink. Why does it seem like the majority of games and accessories geared towards women and girls feel like a mockery?

Ultimately its just a personal choice of what color controller you like. I don’t see anything wrong with just having the black ones, but I guess if a person really wanted to have it styled up… or maybe if that was the only controller available in the store at the time?

    • I wouldn’t mind a neon pink, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen the shade I actually like. I agree – bubble gum pink is just too… ick.

  6. although pink is not my favorite color I do plan on buying it, because I would like to have something feminine while I play those long hours with my PS3.(they should also think on getting out a purple color controller)

  7. “Sony is claiming that this new colour choice is perfect for girl gamers (because y’know, pink defines us as women)…”
    i lol’ed at this line. <3

  8. Who cares, it’s a color.
    Get over it.
It’s the same as when blue was introduced.
You people are reading WAY too much into this.

When the blue controller came out there wasn’t forums of men complaining about how it’s too gender specific. It’s called variation.

Pink refers to girls, blue refers to boys.
That’s been pretty obvious for a long time.
Since the gaming market is offering more games that girls would like to play, why not add in another color, whether it be pink, purple, yellow, etc. Even if there weren’t “girl-friendly” games, what is the harm in having a pink controller, honestly.

Obviously it’s not meant to be insulting because girls “love” pink. It’s just another option, hell, I bet there will be a significant number of men buying the pink controller. Big deal.

You’re all complaining for the sake of complaining.

  9. can we get this in the uk yet?
