Danish developer’s Playdead Studios’ unexpected download only hit ‘Limbo’ has been named the biggest selling Xbox Arcade game of the summer, according to a report by Joystiq. The creepy little noir side scroller was released early in the summer on July 21st, and has apparently overtaken other releases this season ‘by a long stretch’.
Microsoft Game Studios VP, Phil Spencer says the succcess of titles such as Limbo reflects a change in the Xbox Marketplace, in that people are looking for a diverse range of titles as opposed to it simply been a means of obtaining classics. Spencer said that with additions of downloadable titles such as a Braid, Shadow Complex and Limbo we were seeing the market shift more from iconic characters to a demand for more original and innovative gameplay.
“I think there was a time when Live Arcade was about IP that people knew.”
“We see that in the market, that it’s becoming less about iconic IP that people know and it’s becoming more diverse.”
However in saying this, he was quick to defend the necessesity of classic IP titles such as Castlevania and Lara Croft, and acknowledged that while titles would “always be important”, his personal favourite of the summer lineup had to be Limbo.
“I love Limbo. I think Limbo’s probably my game of the year right now.”
Limbo is available now for download, exclusively on Xbox Live Marketplace for 1200 MS Points.
