It’s a simple enough concept – you’re a monkey, collect bananas – but Super Monkey Ball has proved one of SEGA’s biggest-selling franchises.
The series began in Japanese arcades, before making its hugely successful console debut on the Gamecube in 2001. Since then, Super Monkey Ball has seen a release on just about every console and handheld going, including recent updates for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Now AiAi, MeeMee, GonGon and Baby are preparing to go three-dimensional on your ass as SEGA announce Super Monkey Ball for Nintendo 3DS. The game is said to utilize the console’s top-of-the-line hardware, giving players a choice of the motion sensor or the slide pad when navigating their primate chums around Super Monkey Ball’s infamously tricky levels. In a press release sent out today, franchise creator Toshiro Nagoshi could barely contain himself.
“The moment I saw the features of the Nintendo 3DS, I could not help thinking how perfectly Super Monkey Ball would work on this new hardware. I could quickly picture myself holding the Nintendo 3DS using the motion sensor and playing Super Monkey Ball. The simple gameplay allows players to enjoy the 3D graphics to the fullest and now that we have brought this vision to life…bingo! We have our all-time favourite Super Monkey Ball experience with the new excitement of the Nintendo 3DS!”
Super Monkey Ball for Nintendo 3DS is currently tipped for release in 2011. For more information head to SEGA’s official website.
