The King of Kong documentary making leap to scripted film

3 Oct, 2010

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters was a 2007 documentary that followed high school teacher, Steve Wiebe, as he attempted to snag the Donkey Kong high score away from hot sauce maker, Billy Mitchell. A script is currently in the works for a feature film. The director of the documentary, Seth Gordon, said in an interview with Game Informer that he hopes to stay true to the events in the documentary, but also wants to touch on the events that have happened since then.

Since the documentary, Wiebe and Mitchell still continue to shatter records. At the end of the documentary, Steve successfully reached a new world record of 1,049,100. However, in celebration of the release of the documentary, Billy Mitchell retook his world record with a score of 1,050,200. From 2007 to 2010 Mitchell’s score remained untouched until a plastic surgeon from New York obtained a score of 1,061,700. In August, Mitchell once again retook his high score by a mere 1000 points.

Steve Wiebe managed to beat Mitchell’s score just earlier this month and is currently the world record holder with 1,064,500.
