Girls can make games too

Girls can make games too

5 Oct, 2010

Nat Marco a 26 year old game designer is featured in this brief video on the BBC newsbeat site.

There isn’t really any context to this video so its hard to comment on. Given the date of their upload it looks like this could have been at the recent Eurogamer show in London where smaller studios have had an opportunity to show their wares.

What do you think of gamers in the industry? Write in the comments or head over to our community to have your say.

Some of the lead artists and creative people on Halo are girls, but I don’t think the game is better off because women helped with it.

Having more women in the industry could help with more varying opinions and styles. I would rather have less people of any gender in the industry if the people who are in are really damn good at it, than more of a specific type of people if they’re not that talented.

The male dominated image of the industry should be tackled though, but hiring more women just because they’re women isn’t how to do it.

Agreed. But women won’t come into the industry at all unless the innate misogyny and stereotyping is tackled. That’s the issue. By turning them off at Day 1, the industry is denying itself a generation of talented female designers and programmers.

That said, I saw that video on the BBC site yesterday and found it bizarre. Without context, it doesn’t say very much other than you’re ok if you’re female providing you don’t aim high and concentrate your efforts in indie/small budget companies …

I find this bizarre, as well. There were loads of female game developers, directors and producers at the Eurogamer Expo (which this seems to be recorded). I even met a few in the careers fare that housed studios like Relentless and Rare, both with female employees at the stalls.
