GAME say that online passes are not affecting preowned sales

One of the main ways which video game retailers make their money is by the sale of preowned titles. In the UK, GAME is one such store, and the companies CEO Ian Shepard says that the market for preowned games is as strong as it ever was, following attempts by companies like EA and THQ using online passcodes to gain access to certain DLC content for the game.

Shepard states in an interview with MCV that “… No we’ve not seen the changes in the commercial nature of how some games have launched make any impact on the trade-in category. It’s still a strong part of our business.”

It begs the question as to whether the current system being implemented by publishers to secure sales of new titles is actually working. For me, price is very important when choosing whether to buy a new game or not, so maybe lower prices on launch would be a better way to secure sales. What would tempt you to buy more new titles?
