‘The Darkness’ sequel still in the works

Fellow comic book fans rejoice! A sequel to 2007 comic book based shooter ‘The Darkness’ is still very much on the cards, according to a report by Eurogamer. The game, released on PS3 and 360 and based on Top Cow Comic’s cult favourite series of the same name was a hit with fans and casual gamers alike, and sequel speculation was rife after Top Cow gave an unofficial confirmation at Comic Con 2008. Top Cow’s Sales and Marketing Director, ‘Freeman’, has spoken out to say that there is still every intention of pushing ahead with a sequel, however there are certain legal technicalities that must be overcome before anything can be given the official green light.

“There are certain rights issues that we needed to clear up in order to move ahead with The Darkness 2. Those are getting cleared up. While there are no specific plans, it is definitely still on all of our minds.”

“We loved the game. The fans loved the game. There’s no reason to not do another one. Just making sure that all of our ducks are in a row so that we can begin that process.”

The story of the game follows young Mafia hoodlum Jackie Estacado, who when he comes of age finds that he is to become host to a dark and dangerous entity known as ‘The Darkness’. Jackie finds that he must learn how to harness these powers in order to survive and protect his sweetheart, while at the same time trying to bring down his trigger happy Uncle who happens also to be his ruthless ‘Boss of the Family’. While the concept of the game in terms of it’s story took some creative licence in deviating slightly from the comic book canon, the game was still especially popular with the series fans, and also with the guys at Top Cow themselves!

‘Starbreeze’, the studio behind the first title, publically announced in 2009 that they would not be involved in the making of any sequel to their game, and it is unclear at this time as to whether any other developer has been approached or as to whether the ‘legal issues’ are in any way related to this.

The Darkness is available now on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
