Time Magazine
Time magazine have recently covered the WCG Ultimate Gamer competition with a focus on girl gamers. Their profile of Katherine Gunn is as insightful as you would expect a time article to be and worth checking out.
Her brother and sister have both competed professionally in the past. “My mom’s probably at home playing Call of Duty right now,” Katherine says. Gunn started her career as a teenager handing out beatdowns in Halo, playing under the tag “Mystik Weasel” on her father’s Xbox Live account.

IGN Female editors panel
A blog from North California has just covered the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle where a panel of five female editors from IGN discussed girl gamers.
“If you don’t know what you’re doing, a (hand-held game) controller is terrifying,” said Dana Jongewaard, editor-in-chief at IGN.com.
The panelists encouraged men to find out what types of games their wives and girlfriends are interested in playing. Good art and storytelling appeal to women more than first-person shooter games, said Jessica Chobot, IGN.com staff writer.

Cosmo
Cosmo have published a story updating on their previous rant to “take PlayStation controllers away from boyfriends to improve communication” to actually giving it a go yourself and challenge them to a competition. With 2.9 Million sales this might end up getting a few Wii’s dusted off.

Brockport College surveys girl gamers on campus
Finally is this story from a small college in Brockport.
“I’m pretty good at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 online,” [Hilary] Coon said. “Guys usually get rattled when I kill them a bunch of times and have a good kill/death ratio, and then they realize I’m a girl. Men are way too sensitive when it comes to gaming.”…
These are hearty games, not exactly Barbie: Race and Ride (which is owned by one of my male friends coincidentally). It seems like women almost have a more diverse taste in gaming than men. Where most men I know focus primarily on sports and shooters, women are able to branch out to many story-driven games as well as the competitive ones.
