Cult US Film magazine Fangoria, today got the newest scoop on the until now ambiguous sequel to the movie adaptation of Silent Hill. The sequel which has been given the working title ‘Silent Hill: Revelation’ is said to be finally ready to start filming in 2011 under Lionsgate films, with new comer Michael J. Bassett on board as scriptwriter and director. The film has also been announced to be showcasing in 3D, following fellow game-to-movie adaptation Resident Evil Afterlife 3D which opened in September this year.
Curiously, Silent Hill: Revelation seems to be taking lead from the plot of Silent Hill 3, which considering the deviation from the game’s canon in the first film seems rather nonsensical, unless we are to assume that the new creative brains behind this installment are in a sense starting a fresh. Fangoria included the offical synopsis to Silent Hill: Revelation within their article:
“For years, Heather Mason and her father have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she’s not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.”
There has been a wave of uncertainty surrounding the project in the wake of Christophe Gans announcing that he would not return to direct a sequel, and script writer Rogery Avary of Pulp Fiction fame currently serving a jail sentence for a drink driving offence which resulted in a fatal accident. The movie franchise of the game has not been met with entirely universal support from film-goers and fans of the games alike, with many finding that the film simply took too many liberties with the lore of the series unnecessarily, ensuring that it would be difficult to make faithful sequels in the same vein of the games, while on the flipside many have declared it to be among the best game-to-movie incarnations to date.
