Double Fine Stacks Up

Double Fine Stacks Up

30 Nov, 2010

There’s a quirkiness about Double Fine that’s just irrepressible. With a keen sense of fun, and inability to take itself – or it’s products – overly seriously, I stalk what comes out of Tim Schafer’s head like a fat girl watches doughnuts.

There’s been no resting on laurels following the release of the sleeper seasonal hit Costume Quest. Double Fine’s latest offering, Stacking, is … actually, why not watch the video now? It may take a writer greater than I to make a 1930s-esque game about Russian stacking dolls sound appealing.

There. See what I mean about being hard to describe?

Anyway. In keeping with previous DF titles, Stacking sports a unique and beautiful visual style all of its own. Touted as an action/puzzler, Stacking is about chimney sweep Charlie Blackmore, the world’s smallest Russian stacking doll, and – according to the website – his quest to reunite his family after they’ve been “forced into indentured servitude by an evil industrialist”. By nesting within other bigger, more influential characters, Charlie is able to utilise their unique skills and his abilities to help find his wayward family members.

As Stacking isn’t expected to launch on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network until Q2 2011, here’s some screens to whet your appetite.
