Guess Who’s Coming for Christmas?
As if the awesomesauceness of a Christmas Day episode of Doctor Who wasn’t quite exciting enough, the BBC are positively spoiling us this holiday season with news that – even as the Doctor Who theme fades in our ears – we’ll be able to download the fourth and final episode of the 2010 Doctor Who: The Adventure game.
Yes, immediately following the Christmas episode broadcast, the Beeb will release the free PC (and Mac) episode, entitled Shadows of the Vashta Nerada.
Sound familiar? If you’re a Doctor Who fan – and my God, I am – you may remember that the Vashta Nerada were the weird flesh-eating shadow creatures from the Tennanttastic episode Silence in the Library. Or the “WHO TURNED OUT THE LIGHTS?” episode – whichever moniker you prefer.
“We’ve gone all-out for the season finale,” says Moffat, Who executive producer. “Shadows of the Vashta Nerada takes place entirely underwater – something which would be impossible for the TV series, as water is so expensive. It’s thrilling, terrifying, educational and fun. Just steer clear of those shadows…”
The game will be released simultaneously on PC and Mac from the Doctor Who website on Christmas Day. The game will be free to players in the UK households but players outside the UK can still purchase and download it on the same date.
Oh, and don’t mourn the last installment – Doctor Who: the Adventure Game will be back in 2011.

This is awesome! BBC is also airing the Dr. Who Christmas Special “on time” this year (I don’t know the exact air date), which is wonderful. Watching Dr. Who late is bad enough, but watching the Christmas special in February is just not as inviting. Maybe have to see how much they want for this, but really I don’t think I’d play it much. I don’t tend to like TV or Movie themed games unless the game came first; in which case the TV or Movie is generally bad!
Side note: “The Beeb” tends to refer to Justin Bieber around here, so I did a double take on that sentence!
