Medeval role-playing fantasy ‘Witcher 2: Assassin’s of Kings’ is to feature a permadeath mode for it’s most extreme difficultly setting, aptly named ‘Insane’. The new title from Poland’s CD Projekt is set to contain a feature that results in the permanent death of the players custom character, going as far even to mean that the players saves will be disabled and invalidated so that death is, well death!
According to report by the website Eurogamer, the controversial move was inspired in the developement team by the tempetuous nature of PS3 exclusive cult franchise Demon Souls. In an interview with the writers of Eurogamer, Witcher’s gameplay designer outlined that as any game mode calling itself insane should, this is certainly going to be no cake walk, and players are going to find it extremely difficult to even try the old chestnut of avoiding foes:
“It won’t be easy to not fight the monsters. We fixed that by giving all opponents special abilities which allow them to catch the Witcher,”
“Undead can dig into the ground and get up near the player. So when you run he will dig up in front of you and grab you. It will be harder to just run and avoid the fight.”
Developers are teasing that despite the horrendously daunting challenge that is the prospect of Insane Mode there will be payoff for the determined player, stating simply “There will be an achievement for that, for sure.”
Witcher 2 is set to continue the none-linear tradition of it’s predecessor, inviting the player into a vast and rich world of adventure. For those who played the original game, Eurogamer report that it will be possible to import save game files from the first game for use in Witcher 2 to create a Mass Effect style character cross-over. Decisions made in the first game will have impact on your experience in the sequel, and items in your inventory can also be pulled over for good measure. Developers were quick to assure newcomers to the series that there is still plenty of opportunity to catch up and begin playing from Witcher 2, but it will be likely that for the fullest and most immersive experience will be had by those with credentials in the original game.
Witcher 2: Assassin’s of Kings is due for release on the PC 17/05/2011
