Coming up in 2011: The Last Story

3 Jan, 2011

There are many games I’m looking forward to this year, but as luck would have it the one I’m most desperate to get my hands on may not leave Japan. That’s right, I’m talking about the enigmatic and eagerly anticipated Japanese RPG The Last Story.

The game has faced a number of unexplained delays but all being well will be released in Japan on January 27 and marks Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi’s return to directing after an 18 year break. Nintendo have not yet announced a release for the rest of us, and during a recent press presentation there was absolutely no mention of an overseas version. However, given the massive amounts of publicity and interest this game has generated there does seem to be some hope that it will be translated into English – in fact, the theme song is already in English.

Little is yet known about the game itself although from the hundreds of screenshots available on the internet the game would appear to be your typical Japanese RPG, combining a mixture of real-time and command-based battle mechanics, stunning cut scenes and high drama set firmly in the fantasy genre.

The Wii could certainly do with a decent RPG, and it appears this game might just fit the bill. It obviously has a lot in common with Final Fantasy and may prove just as popular if Mistwalker play their cards right. Personally I felt let down by Final Fantasy XIII and hope The Last Story can bring us something different and more satisfying that connects with players on a more emotional level. Its evidently made the very best of the Wii’s graphics capabilities and regardless will be a truly beautiful adventure.
