Japanese 3DS launch line-up unveiled

10 Jan, 2011

Nintendo have teased us with a few delicious little morsels of info prior to the release of their brand new handheld, the 3DS, which launches in Japan on February 26th. These tidbits include a full launch software line-up plus a few technical specifications to wet our whistles with.

The list of games that will be available on release day was announced at a preview event held in Tokyo last week. It’s remarkably short and, quite unlike Nintendo, largely made up of third-party titles. Even worse – no, I’m not biased! – there’s no sign of any Resident Evil on said list. However, Resident Evil 3D: The Mercenaries HAS been confirmed for a Spring release in Japan.

We already know that the 3DS will feature three cameras, one front-facing and, more importantly, two on the other side capable of taking 3D photographs, as well as an accelerometer and a gyroscope for motion-sensing tilt madness. It’ll contain internal memory, as well as compatibility with SD cards and will be fully backwards compatible with all DS and DSi software. From the event, we also now know that the battery life will, unsurprisingly, be less than a third of the DSi. Ouch.

Nintendo have announced via their Japanese website that the 3DS battery will take three-and-a-half hours to charge fully, lasting three to five hours for 3D games and five to eight when playing standard DS games. That is the price we pay for such a huge technical advancement, folks! Anyway, that’s enough bad news – feast your eyes on the 3DS launch line-up!

  • Battle of the Giants: Dinosaurs 3D

  • Nintendogs+Cats
  • Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle
  • Puzzle Bobble 3D
  • Ridge Racer 3D
  • Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition
  • Samurai Warriors: Chronicle
  • Winning Eleven Soccer 3D
  • And that’s your lot! Though games were first expected to retail at around the same price as standard DS software, it’s now looking more and more likely that 3DS titles will be priced nearer the £34.99 – £39.99 mark when the console finally lands in the UK next month. Expect more information following the next preview events, taking place in New York and Amsterdam next week.

The Nintendo 3DS launches in Japan on February 26th priced at ¥25,000, with a release for the rest of the world following in March. Tentative retail figures suggest customers in the UK can expect to pay around £200 (€240/$310).
