Final Fantasy XIII-2 on the way?

Final Fantasy XIII-2 on the way?

13 Jan, 2011

News has spread like wildfire this morning that Square Enix have officially registered a domain name that suggests a direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII is in the pipeline. Square Enix released the first true Final Fantasy sequel in 2004 with Final Fantasy X-2, which follows ex-High Summoner Yuna two years on from the events Final Fantasy X.

Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase was quizzed about the possibility of another Final Fantasy sequel in March of last year and refused to rule it out, saying “If we could do a XIII-2, we could direct all our attention to the story and refine what we have already built.”

Final Fantasy XIII was released in March 2010 to mixed reviews and a middling reception from consumers. Regardless, it quickly became the fastest-selling title in the series 24-year history, shifting the best part of six million copies in 8 weeks.

What do you think? Did you enjoy Final Fantasy XIII? Would you welcome a proper follow-up to Lightning’s story? Leave your comments below!

  1. I really hope this isn’t true. I didn’t think Final Fantasy XIII was a particulary bad game, but unless a lot of harsh lessons have been learnt from Final Fantasy X-2 any sequel could potentially be incredibly painful. Neither Final Fantasy needed a sequel, so please Square Enix, leave this one alone and concentrate on bringing us a better, new adventure for the next game.

I have to agree Tanya. To my mind there hasn’t been a proper FF game since IX, not that the recent ones have been bad games, they’ve just lost the magic they had in the PSone days that I’m not convinced they can get back.

I’m still waiting for Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Which would possibly be what we’re looking at. Although it isn’t the best FF I do like it and think that this could be a good idea.

Uugh. FFXIII was ok, but I don’t think it was remarkable enough to deserve a sequel. That being said, even when FFX (one of my favorites in the series) got a sequel, it turned out terrible!

    • I have to admit Final Fantasy X-2 is a guilty pleasure of mine. :P I know it’s shit but its good fun and it doesn’t take itself seriously at all! :)

X-2 is one of the only FF games I can actually play – I can actually handle combat in it for some reason, but not X itself. Haven’t tried XIII though.

i think its a gr8 idea, i mean, xiii-2 will have great potential, and it would make perfect sense that it wont b linear anymore because they are not on the run anymore, plus there probably will be towns and stuff if you check out episode i, i hope there is a sequel

Please. Final Fanasy X was great, and X-2 destroyed all of the foundation it’s predecessor had built. FFXIII was lackluster at best, with no real substance towards anything other than graphics, so just imagine how bad its sequel would be. Not to mention, spoilers, but they destroyed the world and 30% of the party is crystallized holding up the husk of said dead planet. Where on earth are they supposed to go with the story? Just let them live in denial that they actually achieved a miracle and ‘saved’ the world.

Do us all a favor Square-Enix and just move on to FFXV, and actually try this time.
