PS3 and Steam feeling the companion love

PS3 and Steam feeling the companion love

19 Jan, 2011

When Valve said that they wanted the Playstation 3 version of their sequel to cult series Portal to be the definitive console edition of the game, it seems they really weren’t kidding. The PS3 rendition of the game is apparently set to include a neat little feature which allows console players to connect with Steam users on the PC and Mac! Another bonus, an extremely generous one at that- anyone purchasing the PS3 version of the game will receive a complimentary copy of the game on Steam completely free of charge!

Playstation players will also be able to link their PSN ID’s with their Steam accounts allowing for party chat and game invites between the three platforms. Players are hoping that the closing gap between the two formats will allow for console players to see the benefits of updates as regularly as those using Steam, as well the potential for DLC to be free for download on PSN as with it’s counterpart.

Both Valve head honcho Gabe Newell, and Project Leader Josh Weier came forward to proudly boast of the games newest feats, with Newel stating:

“Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases.”

Weier ellaborated on several of Newell’s points, claiming that in addition to including the new cross platform functionality they also wished to provide players with a user friendly and straight forward gaming experience:

“PS3 gamers will be able to simply drop the Blu-ray disc in the PS3, link to their Steam account from inside the game, and all their Steam friends (on PC and Mac) will be visible and accessible for chat and game invites.”

I think I can speak for several members of the team here at GGS Gamer when I say that this is one of the biggest games on the radar so far this year, and as it comes closer and closer to release it is certainly shaping up to be one 2011s highlights!

Portal 2 is due for release on Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC and Mac from 21/04/2011.
