Tonight, SnowWorld, a virtual reality snowball throwing game will feature in a BBC documentary as part of the flagship Horizon series: Horizon: The Secret World of Pain.
SnowWorld is used as a distraction tool when treating patients that must endure extreme and prolonged bouts of pain, for example when individuals that have suffered severe burns, must have dressings changed. Often, the pain they experience during such procedures mirrors that of the original accident that caused their injuries. Such pain levels are insufficiently managed by traditional pain medication.
However, studies have shown that pain levels experienced and reported by patients are significantly lower when the patient is playing SnowWorld, compared to when they are not.
The original version was designed and developed by Professor Hunter Hoffman with the latest version being built by Ari Hollander and Howard Rose from www.imprintit.com.
To see more about SnowWorld and its effect on pain, be sure to watch Horizon: The Secret World of Pain on BBC Two, 31 January 2011 at 21:00 GMT (UK).
