Activision axe Guitar Hero: 2005-2010, RIP

10 Feb, 2011

Guitar Hero’s 2010 incarnation, Warriors of Rock, is to be its last, according to Eurogamer.

The news follows exceptionally poor sales of the game, in the face of competition from Harmonix with Rock Band 3, and declining appeal in the genre.

Reports paint a grim picture, with news of massive layoffs at Vicarious Visions, responsible for the Wii version of WoR, and DJ Hero development team FreeStyle Games. News also broke yesterday that Activision have cancelled development of United Front Games’ crime-fighting sandbox action reboot, True Crime: Hong Kong.

According to the Guitar Hero Twitter account, no further DLC for GH or DJ Hero will be produced beyond February, though the current catalogue of games will remain on sale.

Guitar Hero has sold approximately 25 million units worldwide. At the peak of its success, GHIII: Legends of Rock sold 3.5 million copies in its first seven months, with sequel GH: World Tour shifting 3.4 units in 2008. However, it was not to last – combined US sales of GH: Warriors of Rock and DJ Hero 2 failed to hit 1 million in 2010, a 63% drop on sales achieved in 2009.
