New Resident Evil heading back to Raccoon City?

In the run-up to the release of 3DS exclusives Resident Evil: Revelations and The Mercenaries 3D, the rumour-mill has begun to churn again with whispers of a brand new Resident Evil game, thought to be a return to everyone’s favourite mutagenic virus-ridden suburban town, Raccoon City.

Series veterans will be well aware that Raccoon City was wiped off the map in the closing scenes of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, after the US government initiated a cleansing operation to cover up the T-virus outbreak incident.

So, will this new game be a prequel? Varying reports point to a larger-than-usual number of playable characters, suggesting that in the golden age of online play via the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, a new Resident Evil game in the style of the Outbreak series could be on the cards.

Resident Evil: Outbreak was released exclusively for the PlayStation 2 back in 2003 and allowed four players to team up via the internet to take on the shuffling undead of Raccoon City. Online play didn’t make it to PAL territories and by the time online-ready follow-up Outbreak: File #2 was released, the PS2′s network popularity was on the decline. Servers were shut down in 2007.
