Homefront news, 2011 FPS battle heating up?

6 Mar, 2011

THQ are almost ready to enter the ring and face the giants behind the current top FPS franchises, Activision and EA. Homefront is released later this month, between 15th-18th March (for most of us), and THQ are promising it will challenge the likes of the Call of Duty and Battlefield series. The game is set in 2027; a united Korea has invaded the USA and you play as part of the American Resistance, determined to fight back making use of “guerrilla tactics, commandeering military vehicles, and utilizing advanced drone technology”.

However, the player may play as part of the Korean forces in multiplayer and this is the part of the game that really interests me. A new multiplayer trailer has been released which you can see here. The gameplay in the trailer looks fantastic visually and it certainly looks like a lot of fun. Homefront will feature 32 player online warfare and shall have dedicated servers, which is always nice to hear. The dedicated servers are for both PC and consoles, which, without a doubt, gives the game a distinct advantage over current FPS titles. However, it is suspected that Activision and EA will both make use of dedicated servers (across all platforms) in their next releases.

Nonetheless, 2011 is definitely shaping up to have a good roster of First Person Shooters. The question is, who will come out on top? Homefront? MW3? Battlefield 3? Or perhaps another game I am eagerly awaiting, Brink?

Homefront is set to be released on March 15th in North America, March 17th in Australia, March 18th in Europe and April 29th in Japan.
