Swarm, the puzzler/ action platform game developed by Hothead Games and published by Ignition Entertainment is available through XBLA on 23 March 2011 and PSN on 30 March 2011.
The aim of the game is to take charge of 50 swarmites that are in search of DNA. The swarmites feed this back into a large blue blob called momma to help it grow. If you think that sounds crazy, you should try watching the trailer below. Swarm already reminds me of Lemmings, only blue, in 3D and possibly on crack.
In order to succeed players will need to use the collective power of the swarmites – they can huddle together for strength and speed boosts, stack on top of one another to reach high obstacles, and jump as a group to reach certain areas. Swarmites will dynamically walk around objects and obstacles, each choosing their own path based on player commands. Swarm will feature mass character control, where players move all the Swarmites at once. The game environment promises to be relentlessly dangerous and hilariously brutal.
“Figuring out new and creative ways of killing the Swarmites while making the game took the whole team to a pretty dark place,” said Joel DeYoung, Producer of Swarm at Hothead Games. “After working on the game for the last year or so, we’re really excited to share our insanity with the world. Let the blue squishy carnage begin!”
