Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Isn’t Aiming to be “Another Horror Game”

If you looked at the trailer for Operation Racoon City and thought, “Yay another horror title!”, then you’d be sorely disappointed.

According to producer Masachika Kawata, Capcom wanted to take Resident Evil into the realm of FPS style games. In an interview with OXM, Kawata revealed a few more tasty tidbits about the upcoming title. “This time around we are setting the game in the Resident Evil world,” said Kawata, “but we aren’t aiming for another horror game, but a shooting game.”

“And we thought about the elements we’d need not only for Resident Evil fans but for fans of shooting games, to appeal to the shooter fans to play this particular game.”

“This game should be a very, very unique one,” Kawata said.

If you’re wanting Resident Evil to go back to the good old days of survival-horror, there’s hope. Kawata said that the horror aspect may be pursued in upcoming numbered titles, but spin-offs like Operation: Raccoon City will more than likely keep branching into other genres.

Capcom released a new trailer today to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise. Alongside some snatches of other upcoming Resident Evil titles this year, it offers a glimpse of Operation: Raccoon City at the very end.

Head on over to OXM to read their interview with Kawata and for more information.
