The Smithsonian American Art Museum announced that it will begin an exhibition called “The Art of Video Games,” an homage to the evolution of video games and how its artistry has changed over the 40-year-old industry. While the announcement was made back in February, the Smithsonian had recently made the decision to extend public voting of which games will be included until April 17th.
Broken down into 5 different eras, the Smithsonian is giving visitors to an online voting site the chance to decide which games will represent which era.
The eras are as follows: Era 1 “START!”, Era 2 “8-Bit”, Era 3 “Bit Wars”, Era 4 “Transition”, and Era 5 “Next Generation”. Voters are given the opportunity to pick which one they think best represents each era, and do not have to vote for each category.
Set to open on March 16th of 2012, the Smithsonian describes the exhibition as “one of the first exhibitions to explore the forty-year evolution of video games as an artistic medium, with a focus on striking visual effects and the creative use of new technologies.” The exhibit will feature influential artists in each era, with names such as David Crane (Atari’s Pitfall!), Warren Robinett (Atari’s Adventure), Kellee Santiago (Thatgamecompany’s flOw), and David Jaffe (Sony’s God of War series, Twisted Metal). Also included in the exhibit will be an exploration of the relationship video games have with pop culture and film. Perhaps they’ll include something on L.A. Noire’s inclusion in the Tribeca film festival, the very first appearance of a video game in the movie-centric festival.
