Anyone even vaguely interested in Portal 2 will have found it hard to avoid Valve’s funny and stylish promotional marketing campaign over the last couple of weeks. From advice to Valentines Day buying or setting up a Turret as a night time guard for the little one- the Aperture Science Investments videos leave Portal 2 shaping up to be one of the Valve’s best games to date- wait, better than Half Life 2!? Well it seems Chet Faliszek of Valve would be saying yes.
Speaking with ‘The Gaming Liberty’ at a recent press event for the upcoming release of Portal 2 Chet Faliszek described the sequel as ‘absolutely the best’ of Valve’s extensive and well loved back catalogue in terms of it’s single player experience. Surprising, and perhaps entirely deliberately the infamous adventures of the Freeman and chums didn’t even get a mention on the comparative scale, with Faliszek instead using Left 4 Dead as a reference point for the level of engagement gamers can expect to see in Portal 2′s co-operative mode.
In terms of single player experience, it’s absolutely the best. In terms of co-op, I’m going to say it’s a tie with the Left 4 Dead series. Left 4 Dead is near to my heart. The Single player is so dense in Portal 2. It’s the best.
With the latest and final part of the Aperture Investments campaign launching yesterday to a spectacle of Chell becoming one with Portals hundreds of meters in the air, it perhaps wouldn’t be premature to assume that she will be joining the rank of Valve’s badass protagonists, wedging comfortable next to Gordon Freeman.
The booming cult success of Portal has allegedly come as a huge surprise to Valve according to Faliszek, who were initially just looking to make a fun game with a new and interesting universe:
“We never could have guessed that it would have taken off the way it has. We didn’t invent the game with this is mind,” “We just wanted to create a good game, with good environments and a cool world and go from there.”
