The mere mention of Silent Hill can set some of the most stoic people in the world on edge. If you’re one who enjoys the thrills and chills of getting the crap scared out of you, then you’ll be happy to know that Akira Yamaoka, the musical genius behind Silent Hill‘s scariest music, plays a huge role in Grasshopper Manufacture’s upcoming Shadows of the Damned.
In an interview with TVG, Yamaoka-san talks about his role as Sound Designer and his collaboration with Goichi Suda, better known simply as “Suda51″, and Shinji Mikami, creator of Resident Evil.
“I’ve been involved for the entire sound production of Shadows of the Damned,” says Yamaoka-san when asked about his responsibilities. “That even includes the footsteps of Garcia Hotspur [Shadows of the Damned's protagonist] and, apart from the voice acting and speaking parts, I’m entirely involved in the sound of the game.” This is great news for anyone that is a fan of Yamaoka-san, who is also the head cheese behind Play for Japan: The Album.
Now, if you’re expecting more of the atmospheric scare fest that was heard in Silent Hill, you might be a little disappointed. Yamaoka-san has been tinkering around for the sounds in Shadows of the Damned, hoping to reflect the high-octane action in his music. “I’m trying a completely new style for Shadows of the Damned compared to my old work with Silent Hill,” said Yamaoka-san. “You’ll probably know that with Silent Hill, I wanted to make very surpressed music… With Shadows of the Damned there is lot more action so the style reflects that.” An excellent path to take, as legendary British punk band The Damned are also involved in the soundtrack. Right now, the music is sounding like it will be so bad ass, your console might just explode from the sheer awesomeness emanating from the audio tracks.
When questioned about working with Goichi Suda and Shinji Mikami, Yamaoka-san answered that he hoped their work will begin a trend of superstar collaborations in the future. “I’m hoping that this new project will help to set [the collaborations] trend,” Yamaoka-san said.
“To answer [TVG's] question, I think that trend will continue where other big names get together and create something new. The game market is facing a new generation of players and a next-generation platform so, rather than stick to the old style of publishing, it has to be changed and one way to do that is to pick the best brains from the other publishers and form a new team.”
Yamaoka-san also expressed that in the future, he would like a chance to collaborate with a Western developer to create something new. Fallout with a heavy dosage of psychadelic radiation hallucinations? We shall see.
Until then, look for Shadows of the Damned, due out on June 24th for Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.
