Ninja Theory’s Enslaved: Odyssey to the West was a tiny gem amidst the blockbuster titles of last year’s October frenzy. A very, very tiny gem, as less than 500,000 copies have sold worldwide as of this past February. Namco Bandai believes the poor timing of releasing it alongside Castlevania, Fable III, and Fallout: New Vegas contributed to the lack of sales.
So what’s in store for Monkey and Trip? While the ending of Enslaved may have left a lot of us wanting more, Namco Bandai has indicated that no sequel is in the works. Lee Kirton, UK Marketing Manager for Namco Bandai, said in this week’s Podcast for Eurogamer that they “want to keep on pushing,” but not to continue the story.
“We’ve got plans as to where we want to take Enslaved, we want to keep on pushing…” said Kirton. “Maybe to a market that hasn’t experienced it yet.” Kirton was not clear on which market that could be, as Enslaved was released simultaneously for both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. Perhaps PC owners will get a chance to play this title in the near future.
The only thing we know for certain is that no sequel is in development at moment, but Namco isn’t completely done with this reincarnation of the Monkey King. “We currently have no plans for an Enslaved sequel,” said Kirton. “However, we are still looking at it.”
With impressive graphics, an equally stellar soundtrack, and decent gameplay, Enslaved certainly had the makings to be something bigger than what it turned out to be. Unfortunately, those of us who enjoyed the thrill of destroying mechs in a post-apocalyptic America may be simply left with the poignant image of Trip asking Monkey if her course of actions was indeed the correct one.
