Gamefly To Acquire Direct2Drive From IGN

Gamefly To Acquire Direct2Drive From IGN

20 May, 2011

When it comes to download services, there is Steam, and then there are a bunch of competitors looking to second place.  One of those competitors, Direct2Drive, started by IGN back in 2005, looks as if it is moving out of its San Francisco, CA offices, as Gamefly is rumored to be buying it as early as next week.

The report, found at MCV UK, seems to be rather certain of the events in question, although it does state that the deal will not be announced to the public until next week.  It seems that the Internet likes to ruin all of these surprise announcements nowadays.

Gamefly has made a name for itself in the game rental arena in the US, and over the last few years, has started acquiring other services outside of its core business, like Shacknews in late 2009.  I am not sure exactly how Direct2Drive fits into their plans, but the PC is the one area where they do not have a presense with Gamefly.  We will keep an eye out for a full announcement next week.
