A long time ago, there was a game called Devil May Cry. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. There was a man: Dante. He was out to find something. He found it, more or less, tucked away on Mallet Island.
That was a long, long, long time ago.
While Capcom has tried, in vain, to revisit the Devil May Cry series and bring it back to form, they’ve now handed off their monster-slashing-wise-a** demon hunting franchise to Ninja Theory, who hopes to revitalize and reboot the series.
You do remember the backlash fans had over the revamped look of Dante, right? If not, this is the trailer that set it all off, first announced late last October.
The cries of “It’s not Dante!” and “What the f*** is this?!” were quite loud, and very clear. Ninja Theory certainly took note of the dissention.
And it might just work to their favor this time.
Capcom’s Senior VP of Business Christian Svensson said in an interview with CVG that their initial designs for Dante were very close to the original.
“The original concepts that came back [from Ninja Theory] for Dante were actually extremely close to the Dante everyone knows and loves,” said Svensson. However, the upper echelons of Capcom ultimately said that they “need [Ninja Theory] to go much further and be much more creative.” Just how much more creative did they get? A whole lot more, even at the expense of a few feather ruffles.
Don’t let that deter you. Check out the latest gameplay trailer, unleashed upon E3 just a few moments ago:
Perhaps now we can start to understand, or guess, just why Ninja Theory made their decisions and how it will fit into the larger scheme of things. Just remember that, with those sweet moves, this game is still a devilish one at heart.
