When some of us are confronted with a question like what your ultimate super power would be, many of us would opt for flying, having x-ray vision, or being immortal. But have you ever thought of the ramifications of being immortal?
Imagine everything and everyone you love dying around you, changing constantly. You’d be pretty lonely, right?
Bryce Boltsman can tell you right now that being immortal isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. In fact, he straight up hates it. Having been born and lived in a world 500 years ago, Bryce has been spending the past few centuries trying to find revenge for his wife who died by his side, and to also settle up a bit of a score.
We’re talking about Konami’s latest IP, NeverDead, which made a bit of a splash at E3 this past week. NeverDead‘s producer Shinta Nojiri had a few words of wisdom in regards to the new mechanic of dismembered limbs, which may leave a portion of us sniggering into our sleeves. “When people see the limbs falling off the main character, it might look kind of ridiculous or even funny,” said Nojiri in an interview with G4TV. “But when you actually play it, it’s actually a very serious game mechanic that you have to strategize properly to fight the enemy.”
That’s right. The strategic usage of limbs rolling around the ground will be the key element to defeating some of the demons you’ll encounter on your journey. Don’t take it all too light-heartedly though, because this game is anything but funny. Sure you could bounce around claiming that it’s all a flesh wound, but then you’d be completely missing the point.
“This game is actually not comical at all,” Nojiri said. “It’s a very hardcore game, and it actually has a very serious plot and serious game mechanic. And what we want to provide through this game is actually a new experience to all the hardcore gamers.”
So when was the last time you lost a limb, but could recall it and reattach it, or make it explode on command and grow a new arm like a snake? We can’t think of one, so props to Konami for introducing this wild idea. “…yes, his limbs do come off, but that’s not it,” said Nojiri. “You can actually pick it right back up and stick it on to your body and become whole in the game. …you can use the dismemberment feature of Bryce in several different gameplay mechanics such as simply shooting when your arm is on the ground or making it explode. So we are going to provide lots of different features and mechanics that you can play around with with Bryce’s dismemberment and immortality.”
Don’t expect a drop-dead gorgeous guy seeking revenge in all that romanticized agony either. Being angry for 500 years can change a man. Nojiri explained that while he might have started off as being a handsome man with all the ladies chasing after him, those last few centuries have been anything but kind to this soul. “…when he challenged the demon king, he actually lost the battle and he was made immortal,” explained Nojiri of Bryce’s immortality. “Now he’s been living on since then and has lost all hope of living and has become a sarcastic and cynical character that hunts down demons on a daily basis.”
Sounds exceptionally interesting, and Konami even provided us some eyecandy with the announcement trailer. We love you guys.
NeverDead will be slaying demons on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this coming winter.
