Things I’ve learned from video games

12 Jun, 2011

Every day, GraphJam provide us with a selection of amazing, crazy and fantastic graphs and charts for our amusement. And each week, we cherry-pick our favourite game-based offering just for you. Because we’re lovely like that.

Who’d have thought that stuffy old graphs could be fun, eh?

This site looked like a pretty good source of gaming news until I seen this.

I don’t want to be patronised by childish pie charts… they may be popular elsewhere on the web but this is just totally out of place…

  2. Hey, Ciaran,

Thanks for the comment. Always nice to hear from new people.

The weekly Graphjam is merely a bit of fun. As the post states, we select a video game themed one each week and share it with you guys. Nothing serious – just something enjoyable and easy to read on a Sunday. :) To be honest, you’re the first person to ever say a bad word about them!

I actually think this is quite interesting (you’ll be able to tell I’m a Political Science major in a moment). While I know this pie graph is merely for fun, it also brings up a very interesting arguement – what DO we learn from video games? Is it better or worse for society?

There are many people in this world that unlike anything else, deem video games to be nothing but disastrous to society, especially children. While it can be argued that games such as World of Warcraft implement a strong sense of co-operation and teamwork, there are jokes like these on the internet that only strengthens the arguement.

Games such as Mass Effect has encouraged people to read as there were books published to help you along with the story. While I doubt many people actually did take a interest in the books, the effort was still there.

Anyways, I don’t want to ramble and make this all serious. The pie graph is actually quite funny but at the same time, makes video games seem like they are nothing more than just childish hobbies when they could offer so much more to the table.
