Once again, it seems Nintendo have decided not to include DVD support on their home console. This, coupled with no support for Blu-Ray playback, means you won’t be able to watch marathons of West Wing or explore Pandora through the eyes of Jake Sully on your Wii U console.
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata had this to say on the matter… ‘Wii U does not have DVD or Blu-Ray playback capabilities.’
‘The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-Ray, such that it didn’t warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.’
Pretty conclusive, then. I guess having a DVD menu on your controller while watching a film on the big screen is out. Shame…
