EA Pulls Crysis 2 from Steam. Now ‘Only On Origin’

15 Jun, 2011

It appears EA are making a play for Steam’s domination of the digital download market, recently pulling both Crysis 2 and Alice: The Madness Returns from the Steam store and making them Origin-exclusives.

EA apparently compares Origin to the likes of XBLA, PSN and Steam. Working with the logic that those platforms have exclusives, they wish to give Origin exclusives too. Word is that the incredibly anticipated Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO is going to be only available on Origin.

This is an interesting development, and I’m curious as to how far EA are willing to take their new play. Will all EA titles soon become ‘Only on Origin’? Will this topple Steam?

I hope not. Steam, and Valve in general, have always been lauded as very customer-focused. Anyone who’s spent time hovering on Reddit‘s /gaming section knows of all the wonderful feedback, refunds and general decent things that Steam have done on behalf of their users.

Accidentally bought a game a day before it goes on sale? Send Steam customer service a message and you’ll likely get a refund. Seriously. It happens a lot.

But will EA deliver this kind of service? I’m doubtful.

It’s ironic that the big title that will decide how this whole situation plays out is based in the Star Wars universe. Like versus Dark. Steam versus Origin.
