We’re all just wondering how Darksiders II can set itself apart from all of the other games it seems to be pulling from. Are we going to see another tank like War? Or are we going to see something more refined? Scrap just about everything that you know from Darksiders the first, because Darksiders II is going to be all about new. That’s the key word here.
Marvin Donald, game director for Darksiders II, sat down in an interiew with Game Informer to have a chit chat about all the shiny new goodness we’ll be seeing. “We wanted a character that felt more agile,” said Donald, speaking of the changes between War and Death. “And honestly I think it’s a lot more fun to move around on the battlefield than it is to just stand there and take the shots. I mean, it’s fun to feel like a tough guy, but we think we got enough of that with DS1.
“In general, Death just has more of a rockstar feel about him. He doesn’t wear as much armor. Instead of a big giant sword, we wanted something that was a little more expressive. We split [the weapon] into dual scythes that will merge together during the course of the combo and form a single weapon depending on which hit you’re on.”
More of a rockstar feel, huh? Death will cut a very noble rockstar-esque figure, if that’s the case. His mission in Darksiders II is to defend the honor of his brother War, who was framed by archangels in the previous game for starting the Apocalypse a little too soon. We hope that wasn’t a spoiler for you, but there you go.
There’s going to be a lot of new, and very fun, things in combat as well. See, that’s the three-lettered word again. Obviously there’s going to be a return of things from the first game such as Wrath abilities (akin to magic abilities, except a little more angry), primary weapons, and secondary weapons. Multi-tasking is the way to go with any defiant hero these days. Do you like collecting fun stuff like epic loot? Your wish is Vigil Games’ command. “With the addition of loot, you can now choose which avenue you want to be the most expressive,” said Donald. “So if you like using Wrath abilities, you’re feeling more like a spell caster, there’s going to be loot that you can equip that’s gonna make it a lot easier for you so that you’re not gonna run out of Wrath as often on the battlefield as you normally would.
“Another major change between the two games is the addition of a skill tree, so you’re going to have to look for synergy between the equipment that you use and the skills that you choose so that you can build something that works well together, and I think your experience is going to vary quite a bit from someone else that’s playing the game.”
Decisions, decisions, decisions. You’re going to have to play a little equipment-and-loot chess, but is that always a bad thing? Never, especially if you like exploration and finding as much stuff as your little pockets can hold. And since you’re Death, we’re sure he has some very deep pockets. With a world that will be a hell of a lot bigger (haha) than the first Darksiders, the possibilities will be endless of what you may find, what will be useful, and what’s just plain old junk.
Now, where’s that demo…?
Darksiders II is due to wreck havoc in 2012 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
