So after only short period of notoriety, the hacker group Lulzsec has made the announcement to disband. The announcement was made on Sunday in a torrent file that apparently contained the Battlefield Heroes beta.
“Behind the mask, behind the insanity and mayhem, we truly believe in the AntiSec movement,” the statement explained. “We hope, wish, even beg, that the movement manifests itself into a revolution that can continue on without us.”
The group revealed itself to be an operation of 6, that had intended from the start to run no longer than 50 days. They also neglected to mention the recent arrest of a 19 year old apparently affiliated with group, who they have claimed previously only ran their chatrooms.
The group has been responsible for many game-industry related attacks over the past 50 days, with Sony, Nintendo and Bethesda being among their victims. They’ve also downed the log-in servers for various online games too, EVE Online & Heroes of Newerth having been unavailable for a short time.
The group has had a mixed response from the internet community, some lionising their actions for their audacity, while others finding them an attention seeking nuisance. They have also come under criticism from other hackers, mainly due to their reliance on DDos (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks to further their cause, which is apparently amateur hacking at best.
Honestly it does seem awfully convenient that they had always planned to disband after 50 days, and how that 50 days coincided with the arrest and court appearance of a hacker supposedly affiliated with their group. It suggests to me that they finally realised how vulnerable they were and now they’re trying to (unsuccessfully) save face while at the same time running for the hills.
