Bestseller, Special Ops Soldier to Pen Battlefield 3 Novel

Electronic Arts announced today that Battlefield 3 will be accompanied by a novel, Battlefield 3: The Russian, written by the highly decorated ex-SAS operator and best-selling author Andy McNab, with co-author Peter Grimsdale. McNab is the pseudonym for the author of best seller Bravo Two Zero (the true story of special forces in Iraq), Immediate Action, Seven Troop, the Nick Stone thrillers and other other fiction and nonfiction titles. He has sold over thirty million books worldwide.

The novel will focus on the back-story of Special Forces operator Dmitri “Dima” Mayakovsky, one of the heroes of the game’s single-player campaign. Dima is a legendary and pragmatic GRU operator, known as a “cleaner”, who does whatever it takes to get the job done. The novel will pick up where the game leaves off, enriching the Battlefield 3 experience. “It is impossible for any single medium to fully capture the emotion and intensity of war. The Battlefield 3: The Russian novel is one window into the experience, and the game is another. They complement each other perfectly,” says McNab.

With first-hand experience of the intense trauma of real war, McNab brings an authentic voice to this modern military story. Battlefield 3: The Russian follows a soldier clawing to keep himself, and his platoon, alive. It will be released alongside the game which is set for release on October 25, 2011 in the U.S. and October 28, 2011 in the U.K.

McNab’s work on the series doesn’t end with the novel. He is also working with DICE studio of EA to ensure the game captures the grittiness of today’s warfare as it takes players from the densely populated city streets of Paris to the barren dustbowl of the Tehran desert.

Battlefield 3 took home an unprecedented 47 industry awards at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) including Best Action Game and Best Online Multiplayer from the Game Critics Awards. The game will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
