July US Games Industry sales lowest since 2006

14 Aug, 2011

The gaming industry in the US has had its worst month in 5 years; with sales on games, consoles and accessories dropping 26% according to the NPD Group.

Analyst Anita Frazier said: “Although there was a decrease in each video game category contributing to the whole, the category with the greatest dollar decline versus last year was console hardware, which was caused by a decrease in unit sales as the average selling price for console hardware was essentially flat to last year.”

Considering that the games industry is one of the stronger elements of the US economy, this is dire if not entirely unexpected news. Though this doesn’t show the sales for the rest of the world, I would imagine that the situation is much the same. Ultimately (with the exception of maybe Japan) the US is the strongest country for not only developing games, but also for the sales and purchasing of anything gaming related.

With any luck this is just an anomaly, related to the unique and hopefully temporary climate in the ‘states right now.
