Guillermo del Toro has Gone inSANE
Being known for making some imaginative (and also some psychologically stimulating) movies wasn’t enough, and this time acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro has turned his sights to the gaming world. The trailer for his upcoming game project inSANE debuted at the Video Game Awards last year, but the mysterious title has since vanished from the scene.
Until today.
In an interview with MTV, del Toro gave a brief update on the progress of the title. Of course, he started off by first confirming that it was nowhere near completion. After all, it has been about a year since its announcement. “We have two or three more years to go,” said del Toro. “It’s huge. I’m learning a lot. I’m going in with a really, really modest ‘I’m learning’ approach. I’m a huge gamer, but going into constructing it, you have to be repsectful of the medium.”
Working with games is very different than working with movies, and del Toro’s modest attitude is the right one to have. Being a master in one field doesn’t exactly you make you a master in another, despite them both having similarities. Of course, in any del Toro creation, you have to wonder what sort of artistic direction he’ll take, especially with the monsters. The fantastical creatures from Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy were testaments to this man’s creative power. “We’ve been designing the creatures, which are obscenely fun and unique,” said del Toro. “You haven’t seen them ever.”
“Obscenely fun” is a great description, and we can’t wait to see what del Toro will have in store for us. Fans of his movies will appreciate the visual appeal if del Toro sticks to what he does best for inSANE.
If you’re wondering about what kind of game inSANE will be, he let slide that it will definitely be in a “large, sandbox-style world” with a dark and sick sort of tone. It isn’t supposed to be gut-wrenching sick, but rather an entertaining kind of sickness. Well, knowing del Toro, only he would be the kind of man to think of something like that, right? “It’s Lovecraftian, it’s really weird, but it’s Lovecraftian in a very sick way, which I like,” explained del Toro. “It’s truly, truly entertaining. Full of action, but also a very shocking game.”
He’s also working closely with THQ and Volition, the latter responsible for Red Faction Guerrilla and Saints Row. Perhaps we’ll see something similar with inSANE‘s sandbox attitude. “We had to build a sandbox, so we designed all the architecture already,” said del Toro.
Just a moment. Did you say that you missed the trailer for inSANE? Albeit short, the trailer certainly conveys the dark and twisted emotion that del Toro is most famously known for, especially in movies like The Orphanage and Pan’s Labyrinth. Check out the brief debut trailer:
inSANE is set to scare us in 2013.
