The trademark battle between Bethesda and Mojang over the word “Scrolls” not only continues, it takes an unexpected turn. Mojang, the indie shop behind building game Minecraft, was creating a card game named Scrolls when Bethesda accused Mojang of infringing on its Elder Scrolls trademark.
Notch, the face of Mojang and Minecraft, posted his charming proposal for a resolution on his blog. He challenges Bethesda to settle the trademark dispute with a trial by combat (à la Tyrion–who didn’t actually participate in the battle himself–of HBO’s Game of Thrones).
Notch proposes several terms for the Quake III battle. The tourney would be Mojang’s three best players versus Bethesda’s three best players. Each opposing pair would face each other in a twenty-minute match. Bethesda and Mojang each choose a level. The third level is chosen at random. If Mojang wins, then Bethesda drops the lawsuit. If Bethesda wins, then Mojang changes the name of the card game from Scrolls to something Bethesda finds acceptable.
No response yet from Bethesda, and there might never be one. Personally, I hope they do respond and are ready to battle, because I’d love to see a legal dispute get resolved this way.
