GameStop Apologises For Deus Ex Coupon Removal

28 Aug, 2011

It’s been a drama filled week for GameStop, who are now attempting to appease their customers over the removal of OnLive coupons from retail copies of the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

For those in the dark about the whole situation; earlier in the week it was revealed by a leaked memo that GameStop were instructing their employees to open up the PC copies of the game and remove an OnLive coupon that was included in the box. The coupon gave you the chance to play the game for free via the OnLive cloud service, by entering a code into the website.

Via GameStop’s official facebook page: “Regarding the Deus Ex OnLive Codes: GameStop’s policy is that we do not promote competitive services without a formal partnership…Square Enix packed a competitor’s coupon within the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution without our prior knowledge and we did pull these coupons.”

In GameStop’s defence, Square Enix had added the coupons without informing them and OnLive is a competitor to the upcoming Spawn Labs cloud service. However regardless of their reasons, the internet exploded with typical outrage.

In response GameStop have offered a $50 gift card and a buy 2 get 1 free pre-owned purchase. All customers have to do is take the email into a local store with their receipt. Quite generous, but at the same time does reveal how worried GameStop have become over the backlash.
