Online RPG Dragon Quest X Announced

5 Sep, 2011

Square Enix held a press conference today in Tokyo to announce their next flagship game. The big news was confirmation that Dragon Quest X: Awakening of the Five Tribes Online, tenth game in the Dragon Quest series, is Square Enix’s next big game. It will be an online RPG available on both the Wii and Wii U. Square Enix plans to release the game next year on the Wii. The release date for the Wii U hasn’t been publicly discussed yet, but with the vague 2012 release date of the Wii U itself, it’s tough for developers to pinpoint the release dates of their own games for the upcoming console.

Gamers on the two consoles will experience and explore the same world so no one gets left behind in the console race. Another console-related bonus? Players can transfer game data to their 3DS and share it with other players via Streetpass, the 3DS’s built-in, wireless communication network.

Square Enix was hush-hush about what storyline the game will follow. But what we can tell from the press release, players can form parties online and venture through the five continents of the world Astoria. (There will be NPC’s throughout for players who don’t game online.) Playable characters will fall within any of the following five races: Dwarf, Elf, Ogre, Weddy (blue, aquatic-like critters) and Pukuripo (tiny robe-wearing fellows).

The Dragon Quest website now has a small news post that lists “usage fee: TBA” among the game’s specifications. This is nothing official, but it looks like Square Enix is at least toying with the idea of charging a periodic subscription fee. Many more details on this, as well as the rest of the game, are expected over the next year.
